Background Story

Barkem’s To Go! was founded by Blake St. Clair, an entrepreneur and designer, who noticed the inconvenience faced by pet owners when traveling with their pets. He aimed to provide a solution that would make feeding pets on the go easier and more convenient. Inspired by the concept of lunchables for pets, St. Clair developed the idea for prepackaged pet meals with separate compartments for food, water, and treats.

The Product

Barkem’s To Go! is designed as a convenient solution for pet owners who travel with their pets frequently. Each package contains one full serving of premium food portioned for different sizes and species of pets, along with vitamin-enhanced water and a treat.

The product is marketed towards traveling pet owners who seek an easy alternative to feed their pets on the go. It is designed to be simple to use; users only need to open the container and feed it to their pets.

The pricing for the product is estimated to be between $2.50 and $3.00 per package, with production costs estimated at 64 cents per package excluding food. The packaging design is the primary focus, with plans to license the food portion to pet food companies.

How It Went

The company’s position before Shark Tank

Barkem’s To Go! is still in the early stages, with a prototype developed but not yet marketed or available for sale. St. Clair has attempted to contact pet food vendors but has not made any significant progress. The product has a patent pending, protecting the design, and St. Clair has also trademarked the name. However, there is skepticism among the Sharks regarding the market demand for the product, with concerns raised about its viability and potential value.

The Negotiations:

Despite some interest from the Sharks in the packaging concept, no deal was made. The Sharks expressed doubts about the market demand for the product and its value proposition. St. Clair defended the idea, highlighting its convenience and potential appeal to pet owners. However, the Sharks ultimately felt that the product was too early in its development and lacked a clear market need. St. Clair left the Tank without a deal but remained optimistic about the future success of Barkem’s To Go!.
